Mist over Warren River June 2018 650mm x 650mm (framed) watercolour on canvas

Some time after bushfires had swept through the forests around the Warren River near Pemberton, and autumn chills brought on the first early morning mists, I was walking by the river. As the sun rose a little more, the first rays hit the mist, reflecting off it and rendering it almost opaque. The view became one of incredible subtlety, with tones of the white mist, a few pools of shimmering colour where sunlight crept in under the mist to catch the water where its flow was broken by branches and rocks, and the faint traces of trees still bearing the scars of the fires. I have tried to capture this sense of light and transparency in what is otherwise a rich and densely timbered landscape.

Mist over Warren River was selected for display in the City of Busselton Art Awards, October 2018.

Ponte del Diavolo, Torcello 2019. 630mm x 535mm. Watercolour on canvas

Unlike the other islands of the Venetian lagoon, Torcello has a more open, rural landscape with only one”canal” that winds in toward the main settlement. There is one bridge, with no railings, just a brick archway with a brick and slab path that leads across the water to the farmland on the other side.

Howard's Paintings

Waitin’ at Leighton April 2020. 1250mm x 1250mm (Framed) Oil and acrylic on canvas

This scene is based on a photograph I took when driving past Leighton Beach, just north of Fremantle, on a lovely day in autumn. A few hardy souls were braving the chilly water, against a backdrop of freighters waiting to enter the inner harbour to load or unload.

Geographe Littoral 2019 -2020. 1250mm x 1250mm (Framed). Oil and acrylic on canvas

This high angle or aerial view of the beachfront at Busselton depicts the transition from the blue of the deep water, through the shallows, the beach and promenade, to the trees which mark the fringes of vegetation - representing the entirety of the Geographe Bay littoral, commenting on the interaction between the natural environment and that imposed by humans - the long jetty and swimming baths as well as the promenade and retaining walls protecting the rail line as it snakes out onto the jetty.

Burnt Hill 2020 1020mm x 1020mm Oil and acrylic on canvas

This painting was triggered by aerial coverage of the devastating bushfires in Victoria and southern NSW early in 2020. Sally and I were watching the news coverage, and the image of charred forests, with the remains of trees sticking up like blackened toothpicks from bared ground and the white, ash-covered areas where there had once been buildings, sheds and other man-made structures stuck in our minds. So this is really a painting of that memory, and interestingly, Sally also painted her watercolour version of it although neither of us was aware that each was doing that at the time.

Fimiston I. 2022 1240mm x 1560mm. Oil and acrylic on linen

The Fimiston open cut gold mine in Kalgoorlie is the largest open cut mine in the world, measuring more than 2Kms in length and about 1Km deep. It is an awe-inspiring sight, but the aspect that really appealed to me was the colours revealed in the exposed underground strata, particularly in the mineral-rich seams that seem to spill down into the pit.

Fimiston II - Endurance. 2023. 1240mm x 1560mm. Oil and acrylic on linen

In this painting, I wanted to play down the intensity of the colours while introducing some of the local flora that somehow survive against the odds, clinging to the very edge of the pit. It is an incredible example of defiance, with Nature demonstrating its resilience and endurance.

South Melbourne View 2021 1020mm x 1020mm Oil and acrylic on canvas C and E Worth

This is the view from our son and daughter-in-law’s townhouse in South Melbourne. Sally and I stayed with them in the autumn of 2019, when I took several photos of the scene from their living room on the third level of the townhouse, across Cecil Street towards the town hall, with all the autumn leaves curtaining the streetscape. A few months later some winter storms swept through the area and most of the street trees were damaged, with one being lost completely, which is what prompted me in part to paint the picture.

The Effects of Wind and Rain: Canal Rocks Lookout 2020 1230mm x 1230mm Oil and acrylic on canvas

Stopping at a lookout just up from Canal Rocks, I wandered to where the hill fell away to the rocky beach below, when I saw this tree. It seemed as if it was trying to claw its way up the hill, back to its rightful place amongst the other vegetation. It was amazing to think that the extremes of weather could create such a distorted shape.

The White Chair 2022 1020mm x 1020mm Oil and acrylic on canvas

This painting is of the Pisan family muss just outside Treviso, north of Venice. It was done in appreciation of the assistance given by Jane and John Pisan to Sally and Howard when they were preparing for their exhibition in 2021.
